If you have been using Windows for a long time, you might be familiar with classic themes that old Windows versions had. They had colorful window frames with gradients and custom fonts which were based on the erstwhile grey theme. Such themes were available in Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 2000 and Windows XP, which was the last Windows version which had them natively. Here is my port of those themes to Windows 10.
Unfortunately, there is no direct way to get the exact appearance of any of the classic themes, especially the ones which have title bar gradients. Windows 10 comes without the classic theme engine. Microsoft has removed support for most color and font metrics and only keeps themes based on visual styles. The Aero engine, which is the only one available in Windows 10 (and Windows 8), has no support for title bar gradients unless system files are patched. However, let's not go into that territory. I managed to get something that looks close to the original classic themes.

In order to return classic context menus everywhere we need to follow these two tutorials: -wide-context-menus-in-windows-10-and-revert-them-to-classic-appearance/ -get-rid-of-dark-context-menu-in-windows-10-taskbar/
Many thanks. I will try myself. The custom visual style you shared looks very interesting. I know about OldNewExplorer, I even covered some time ago HERE The result you got is really impressive for people you like the classic theme.
This download will not work with Windows versions higher than 14393. The website link leads to a ZIP where the themes were re-created and applied using the Desktop Architect palette, which allowed me to pick the right colors for each theme.
This is being written in May of 2014, if you're from the distant future you could be running a different version of windows 8 and any number of things could have changed. This guide applies to windows 8 and windows 8.1.
I am actually using the classic.xaml file contained in the download you gave me the url for and it works to my satisfaction. It only holds a reference to an assembly that seems not to be part of Net 4. I had to remove the reference and the one Control that was using it to make it work. The reference is:
I was always attracted to this theme ever since Windows 95 released and when Windows 98 brought the gradient title bars with it, I thought those were so freakin' cool. Even When Windows XP/Vista/7 brought the Luna(XP) and Aero(Vista and later) themes with it which looked nice as well in my opinion, I would just switch back to classic because that's what I preferred and was so used to.
Well done, SemoB. I'll be using this for my Windows 10 installation for the foreseeable future. Congratulations on a successful release. Although I can tolerate the default Windows 8/8.1/10 theme by MIcrosoft if I had to, it just looked depressing to me and I hated when Microsoft ditched the Classic Theme option for Windows 8 and later. So, your recreation of the Classic Theme is a welcome addition to the mix. This is great! I have been looking for a convincing classic theme for a while now. The only thing I would really love is a themed start menu included. I can't use classic shell on my system, so the start menu is the only thing that doesn't fit currently. Thanks so much for your work on this!

In the sea of paid skins that hits this site everyday, here's a free one i can finally get into! I loved every single thing out of it, really hope to see a classic startmenu soon aswell! This goes well with my Windows Default cursors port to CursorFX. Along with my animated wallpapers, its amazing! Thanks a lot for that! This is great! All you should have to do is to download the theme file with accompanying folders to C:/Windows/Resources/Themes/ then right click on the desktop background, click personalize, and change the theme. Easy as pie.
32bit:Right-click, take ownership for the original system files. For the explorer, just copy it into the folder windows & the others just copy them into the system32 folder. Then, restart your computer.

I have several machines with low memory (1GB) so they are kind-of slow with windows 10 all they do is POS (point-of-sale) so I was wondering where is windows classic theme since it takes less memory to run if I disable themes with msconfig it just disables desktop picture and colors
In the win10 enterprise Beta at least, you could copy windows classic theme (classic.theme) from "%windir%\Resources\Ease of Access Themes\" and get something derived from what you want. Then you may simply be able to change a few small things and save it as a win10 theme for your POS systems. You probably have also done this already but check that all the bells and whistles are turned off in performance options as well as managing services started. 2ff7e9595c
